Severe storms possible across North Georgia Tuesday night

North Georgia residents are being urged to prepare for a round of potentially severe storms late Tuesday into early Wednesday, with a Level 3 (enhanced) threat now issued for parts of northwest Georgia. The region could face damaging winds, large hail, and even a brief tornado as a cold front moves across the state overnight.

What we know:

According to FOX 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Alex Forbes, a weakening but still potent line of storms is expected to roll into Georgia from Tennessee and Alabama, where the threat for severe weather is even higher. Storms are projected to move from northwest to southeast between 10 p.m. Tuesday and 5 a.m. Wednesday, with conditions clearing by sunrise.

The risk for storms stems from a stalled front across the Southeast combined with disturbances riding along the boundary. While the most intense storms will likely remain west of Georgia, meteorologists emphasize that the overnight timing of the system adds an extra layer of concern.

Forecasters recommend keeping weather alerts enabled on mobile devices and reviewing severe weather safety plans, especially since storms are expected while most people are asleep.
